LAS VEGAS -- While historically the slowest season for area rug sales, summer market had a coterie of buyers turn out to shop the latest additions to the category at Las Vegas Market, July 26-30.

Across World Market Center, area rug exhibitors presented a broad assortment of fresh designs in myriad weaves and price points to appeal to both retailers and interior designers attending the market.

The featured rug collections illustrate some of the most compelling interior trends holding sway over the buying public. Among the most prevalent style trends, updated traditional patterns -- across weaves from performance indoor-outdoor to heirloom hand-knotted -- remain a dominant force. The latest entries include softly colored neutral palettes -- some of which showcased popular sage greens -- and, as a counterpoint, richly colored jewel-toned designs offering a more dramatic effect. Zero piles continue to be in demand for lending a vintage styling to hand-knotted classics, while machine-woven alternatives are turning to space-dyed yarns, gentle ombre grounds and soft distressing effects to impart an old world charm and handcrafted feel. And in both the machine-woven and handmade categories, buyers are also seeking more substantial and weightier pieces, as a segment of the marketplace turns to a plush, dense feel underfoot. In line with this movement is a return of shags and plush pile rugs, which showed up in both handmade and machine-made debuts.

All-natural fiber products in handcrafted weaves remain a best-selling characteristic and rug exhibitors presented plenty of trend-driven debuts in styles such as contemporary geometric, updated traditional and abstract. Some of the latest abstracts are being showcased in 100 percent wool hand-knotted constructions lending a fresh character to the genre, which continues to see new introductions albeit in smaller numbers than in the past.

An exciting development gave Las Vegas shoppers a first look at an innovative handmade washable wool collection that brings new easy-care options to the natural and sustainable home trend. And, machine-woven rug collections, woven from mostly wool and often offering hand-finished details, continue to grow with new rollouts at summer market.
