CHICAGO -- Crate and Barrel debuts a new home furnishings collection that pulls the late-19th and early 20th century Prairie School style into the 20th century.

The collection brings a love of nature indoors with crafted details, earthy textures and natural materials such as wood. "We're forever drawn to stunning, inspiring nature," said Sebastian Brauer, VP product design at Crate and Barrel, of the new Modern Prairie Collection.

Long and low upholstery, hand-crafted pieces, organic materials and curved forms in a warm fall-inspired palette of colors form the backbone of Crate and Barrel's new Modern Prairie collection. Shown, Sculpt chair and Ruell Rug in black.

In fact, the Prairie School movement, which originated in the Mid-West, promoted the idea of organic architecture, where homes should look as though it grew naturally from the grounds they sit on. The design movement, which counted Frank Lloyd Wright as its most famous proponent, sought to develop an indigenous North American style of architecture that didn't draw from earlier styles of European classical architecture. Among the key tenants of this style included an embrace of hand-crafted designs, natural elements, and focused on the horizontality of the Prairie style buildings, which echoed the wide, flat, treeless expanses of the Mid-West. Inside the walls, Prairie School interiors, which set the stage for minimalist designs, emphasized the use of natural materials, hand-made pieces and geometric forms.

And, Crate and Barrel's Anaise bedroom range, channels 1930s curves and mid-century caning. Anaise's bed frame, crafted of black-stained mindi veneer, creates a sturdy platform and rounds out the dramatic lozenge-shaped headboard inset with an airy screen of woven cane.
