Fashion Outlook: Ikat

FASHION OUTLOOK FOR 2012

IKAT

Ikat is a dyeing technique  that employs a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft fibers. Extremely intricate patterns can be achieved through both single and double (warp+ weft dyeing) ikat techniques

Ikat is a nearly universal weaving style common to many world cultures. It is thought to be one of the oldest forms of textile decoration. Bukhara, Uzbekistan and India are traditional centers for ikat fabrics.

Traditionally, ikat fabrics are symbols of status, wealth, power and prestige. Because of the time and skill involved in weaving ikat, some cultures believe the cloth is imbued with magical powers.
