06302010 1776 Rug Still Flying in Reader's Home

6/30/2010

AFTER 34 YEARS,
MOHAWK'S
1776 RUG
STILL FLYING

This Mohawk 1776 Rug has been in the Bippus home for 34 years

As we enter the Fourth of July weekend, we are again reminded of Mohawk's 1776 Rug, which was introduced by Mohawk in 1976 to commemorate the US Bicentennial.

Tom Bippus, a reader in Evansville, IN, recently sent us a picture of the rug that has been in his family for the past 34 years.

"The rug  is a bit garish, but it hung in my home growing up and I love it," he wrote.

"Oddly enough, we have two in the family, I have one and my aunt has the other. The one in my possession was purchased by my parents in either Providence or Boston during the Bicentennial. Turns out that my father's uncle was a Mohawk distributor and was the source of my aunt's rug," he said.

"My parents hung ours in the porch of our home for over 20 years (out of direct sunlight. We own custom framing business and know the dangers of sunlight).  Thankfully my brother and sister had zero interest in owning it. I love patriotic art and am proud to own this rug," Bippus told Rugnews.com.

In 1976, Mohawk Carpet Mills' Alexander Smith division designed  the  "1776 Rug" to commemorate the United States Bicentennial year. Made of acrylic,  the rugs were Axminster-woven in Amsterdam, NY by Mohawk Carpet Mills.

Mohawk eventually moved to Georgia and the company is now known as Mohawk Industries.

Do you have a patriotic rug in your home or business? If so, we would love to hear about it, and please feel free to send a picture of you with your rug!
