NEW YORK --Geared toward big box, mass merchants and e-commerce buyers, area rug vendors presented trend-forward area rug introductions to encourage buyers to pick up their latest pieces.

The newest additions continue to push the envelope in machine-made rugs, as well as handmade ones, bringing to the masses new looks, styles and textures that were historically only possible at the high end.

Many of the buyers at New York Market Week, held Sept. 14-17, are discerning customers demanding they get the most for each dollar spent. That means styles, colors, innovative fibers and unexpected weaves -- and rug exhibitors across NYC's former Rug District didn't disappoint.

In fact, during interviews and showroom tours, rug executives told RugNews.com that the atmosphere, planning and purchasing was an improvement from earlier this year. And all surveyed rug players were bullish on the sales outlook for 2027, in spite of the negative economic headwinds faced by home furnishings retailers. Buyers from large national chains, department stores and e-commerce were at market, and included players such as Home Goods, Lowes, Pottery Barn, Lulu & Georgia, Macy's Fine Rug Galleries, TJX and Quince.

In touring the showrooms of some of the biggest names at market, the trends remain relatively constant from earlier seasons, but with some interesting tweaks. Updated traditional and transitional designs remain top choices, with warm earthy tones predominating. However rich browns and deeper blues and even pink (as an accent) are gaining traction in this style genre, with some debuts highlighting overdyed traditional Persian designs in inky blues, burnt orange and dark gray.

Other top colorways include greens, blues and brown shades ranging from sandy to caramel and camel to rich warm browns and taupe. Green grounds remain popular in both softer sage and olive shades however deeper jewel tones are in ascendancy. And blue was seen throughout the show, often in trendy navy, but also in lighter hues as well.

Many of the most popular updated traditional and transitional styles in the machine-made category continue to rival the look and texture of hand-knotted rugs, including dense and heavy constructions, as well as zero pile styles. Some in the category are "active" solids, using high-low patterning for movement and depth, and these remain a popular choice at retail for their ease of decorating with.

Modern geometrics also continue to grow in popularity, and the latest designs offered box patterns, grids and contemporary border motifs for a more structured and architectural look. The newest border rugs often feature an empty field with the latest borders composed of repeating floral patterns, check motifs and single line borders. Also gaining in popularity in this style genre are shaped and scalloped edges for softer, more feminine styling.

Finally, abstract designs were omnipresent across showrooms with many showcasing high-low patterns with marbling and veining effects. Art-inspired and painterly abstracts were also on show and all of the above were executed in top trending palettes.

In this exclusive show recap, tour some of the most important rug showrooms at New York Home Fashions Market alongside RugNews.com and discover the bestsellers and top trends in the category.

of wool in India.

Florals were a popular choice for buyers thinking of spring 2027 and Obeetee's popular Tuscany collection, hand-tufted
of New Zealand wool, offered plenty of options. Pictured is a classic floral and vine pattern modernized with overscale
elements and a deep green ground, which buyers appreciated.
