NEW YORK -- Area rug exhibitors that offer mats and scatters for mass merchant, big box and large national accounts are finding success with the category as consumers become more cautious with their spending.

In fact, at the recent New York Home Fashions Market some major players told RugNews.com that sales are strong in the category because of its affordability and the instant update to interiors and porches mats provide.

Nourison Home found success with many introductions in its mat and scatter program across its Nourison brand, as well as in the popular DKNY and Calvin Klein collaborations. What's more the company also featured more runners at the fall edition of New York Home Fashions Market because buyer demand for the size has been growing.

Oriental Weavers upgraded its mats offering introducing a new higher quality lineup that is hand-hooked of polyester. The latest introductions were given a thumbs up by market attendees. OW introduced a range of seasonal designs, playful contemporary nature-inspired looks as well as simple geometrics.

Surya's Livabliss line continues to expand its offering in the mat and scatter category as customer demand grows. Best sellers in the category include its printed chenille and tufted qualities.

Finally, Mohawk Home reports that scatters are doing "excellent," following a nearly 24-month push in the category.

All companies surveyed by RugNews.com continue to invest in the category to inject innovation, fashion and style into their assortments as a way to continue to tap into this popular category. As consumers tighten their wallets, they are more likely to spruce up their spaces with more affordable mats and scatters, rather than purchase an area rug, several of the surveyed executives told RugNews.com.
