Classic Rug Collection Launches Charley Harper Rug & Runner Collection

New York rug studio Classic Rug Collection introduces a range of hand-tufted rugs and runners based on the American artist's wildlife designs.

NEW YORK -- Classic Rug Collection, Inc., a New York firm noted for its fine custom rugs, has launched its new Charley Harper rug and runner collection inspired by the American Modernist artist's wildlife designs. The hand-tufted rugs, bearing Harper’s characteristic designs, are made in India of 2.7 kg. 100 percent fine Indian wool, heavily carved to bring the designs to life.

“I love working with Charley Harper’s clean, modern designs,” said Barbara Barran, rug designer and owner of Classic Rug. “The charm of Harper’s drawings, plus his vibrant use of color, has made translating his work into products an absolute joy.”


Modernist American artist Charley Harper (1922-2007)

The Cincinnati-based Harper was best known for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters and book illustrations, notably his birds. However, the Classic Rug Collection range of six rugs and three runners includes a wide variety of animals from domestic cats, such as Limp on a Limb, to frolicking oceanic creatures. The collection is moderately priced at $499 retail for a 4x6 or 5x5 rug. Custom sizes and patterns will be available.


Cincinnati-based artist Charley Harper's Serengeti Spaghetti by Classic Rug Collection is hand-tufted of wool.

Runners are 2’6” x 7’ and feature some of Harper’s best-loved images, such as Love from Above, with a mama giraffe giving her baby a lick on the head, and Green Cuisine, which illustrates the transition in the food chain from grass to milk.
