NORCROSS,
GA - Jaipur Rugs is a finalist in the 2016 edition of the prestigious
German Design Awards for the Anthar rug from the company's innovative
Project Error collection. Underscoring Jaipur's standing among global
brands in the home furnishings arena, Anthar was nominated in the
Excellent Product Design Category of the juried international event.
The
premium annual international prize of the German Design Council, the
German Design Awards were established in 2012 to identify, present and
honor quality products and projects that jurists consider design
pioneers, not just in Germany, but worldwide. Jaipur is a finalist in
the materials and surfaces innovation competition of the multi-segment
Excellent Product Design Category.
The
Project Error collection debuted at Domotex 2015 in Hannover, Germany in
January, and will be unveiled in the U.S. by Jaipur Rugs at the upcoming
October High Point Market. The German Design Council will hold an awards
ceremony and exhibition of winning designs during the Ambiente trade
fair in Frankfurt, Germany, February 12 to 16, 2016.
"We are
thrilled and honored that the German Design Council shares our passion
for design with meaning," says Asha Chaudhary, chief executive officer,
Jaipur Rugs. "This nomination is even more meaningful for us because of
the unique award process, which places the highest demands on the
evaluations of its prize winners in terms of proven design quality."
"Project
Error is a collection close to our hearts," Chaudhary explains, "because
it embodies our brand mission to empower, connect and inspire through
beautiful design." The Project Error Collection focuses on what
Chaudhary refers to "as nature's mistakes, the misprints and aberrations
that would normally be tossed out." Yet, in the eyes of Kavita (Kavi)
Chaudhary, director of design and development at Jaipur, these blunders
are works of art rather than gaffes, and the new patterns that result
are forms of unintentional expression.
The
Anthar rug nominated for the award is a reproduction of a "faulty"
carpet woven by three artisans who were out of sync with one another.
Rather than a precisely ordered pattern, the result is a whole new
design borne out of an error.
"Not
only is Anthar unique because it is a new form of design, but also
because its specialness is due to the slight differences that occur
during a creative process that requires 180 artisans to work by hand,
from hand-carding the raw wool, to hand-weaving the rug," Chaudhary
says.
The
German Design Council nominates participants rather than nominees
submitting applications for awards, making this selection even more
special.

The shimmer of bamboo silk contrasts wool in a pale colorway of
the Anthar rug, a reproduction of a carpet originally woven by
three artisans who disagreed on their interpretation of the
design. Three distinct panels can be seen, each representing
the work of an individual artist.
