04072009 OW Sphinx to Enter Axminster Rug Market

4/12/2009

OW SPHINX TO INTRODUCE
AXMINSTER WOVEN RUGS

DALTON, GA  – Sphinx, the flagship brand of Oriental Weavers USA, will  launch a new axminster rug line, according to Mike Riley, president of Oriental Weavers USA, Inc.

The rugs will be woven in Egypt of New Zealand wool. They will be designed and colored for the American market by the company's U.S.-based product development team, according to the company.

Oriental Weavers has 14 axminster looms in Egypt and has been making axminster broadloom carpet for the world-wide commercial/contract market for over 15 years.

Riley noted that the axminster  weave is a natural step for Sphinx. "We see outstanding potential for a higher end, fashion-forward rug assortment in the marketplace. While we do understand it is a challenging economy, it is not the time to overlook future market potential by overreacting to current market conditions," he explained.

“The addition of the axminster construction to Sphinx’s area rug assortment is very exciting,” said  Riley.

The move into the axminster market is part of the company's continued  diversification and expansion of product offerings.

“We are committed to develop and expand into new product segments in order to provide our retail partners with complete floor fashion solutions from a vendor they trust and can depend on during any economic condition," Riley said.

"Many rug suppliers are focused today on adding low end goods to their product mix. We are focused on maintaining a well-rounded assortment and further diversifying our total floor covering product offering.”

In 2008, Sphinx launched its high-end woven, patterned broadloom as well as area rug pad and carpet pad.

Founded in 1991, Dalton-based Oriental Weavers USA, Inc. is a division of Oriental Weavers Group, a multi-national collection of companies formed in the 1970s that is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
