LAS VEGAS -- In three markets and three weeks, rug professionals have been able to get a pretty good handle on what is happening at all levels of the retail business. No one is kidding themselves that the good old days have magically returned, but almost everyone sees hopeful signs that things are at least getting better. At least it's not getting worse. Non-traditional patterns now dominate and brighter colors are giving a more cheerful look to rug showrooms.
Beginning with the Atlanta International Rug Market and continuing at the Las Vegas World Market and the Surfaces Floor Covering Expo, major rug vendors have been able to see customers across the entire price spectrum. They have seen rug specialty stores, department stores, furniture stores, home improvement chains, catalogues, Internet specialists and floor covering stores.
