NAVAJO-INSPIRED RUGS MAKE A STATEMENT AT JAVITS

NEW YORK - Southwestern designs styled for the luxury market reinforced the importance of the lodge look at the Rug Show at Javits, which was a canvas for showcasing Navajo-inspired motifs in updated colors by top brands such as Art Resources, New Moon and The New England Collection.  Each company fine-tuned the look in a distinctively upscale way, whether using indigenous undyed wool, or even Tibetan hand-knotting to replace the traditional flatweave.

ART RESOURCES

Art Resources premiered its take on tribal with the introduction of the South West collection inspired by traditional Navajo textile designs. Notes the company's Jack Simantob, "the look has been popular in cabin and Southwest style interiors, and is also being used by our clients in modern settings as well." Crafted in Afghanistan of hand-knotted wool, the range features nine designs, in traditional shades of red, black and off-white.

NEW ENGLAND COLLECTION

Renata Stredl-Fishman of The New England Collection created an impressive display with the Four Corners collection.

Also highlighting the Navajo look, the New England Collection showcased its new Southwest-style Four Corners collection with 14 new patterns updated with a palette of grey, black, white and red ($48/square foot). "We wanted to show off Four Corners at the Javits show because we have had excellent results out west and down south," said Renata Stredl-Fishman, sales and marketing director of the New York firm.  The flatweave wool rugs are made only with natural dyestuffs.

NEW MOON

"Customers are seeking a luxe lodge look for second or third homes." - Erika Kurtz.

New Moon, which has offered Southwest style rugs for about 15 years as part of its Mesa collection, saw dealers perusing the line for customers seeking a luxe lodge look for their second or third homes, according to New Moon's Erika Kurtz.  The Delaware-based company, which makes all its rugs in Nepal, introduced new Mesa collection designs - all in un-dyed Tibetan wool, or colored with natural vegetal dyes blended with undyed wool. "This is something newer we have introduced:  the designs tend to lean more geometric and contemporary than our usual tribal."  Kurtz said a new soft weave pile replaces the traditional flatweave of typical Navajo-inspired carpets, resulting in a more luxurious carpet.

In addition to the Navajo-inspired style LW50B in natural, other new lodge styles include the updated African Kuba cloth motifs in natural colors.  New Moon has recently introduced a complete range of Mesa collection decorative pillows with South Western motifs hand-printed on hand-woven linen.
