LUXE RUG MAKERS NAMED FINALISTS IN THE 2017 NYCxDESIGN AWARDS


The highly textured and intricately woven Belem design from the Circle of Life collection by Ayka Design is a finalist in the NYCxDESIGN Awards

NEW YORK -- Four international rug companies -- Ayka Design, Kasthall, Nanimarquina and Warp & Weft -- have been named finalists in the NYCxDESIGN Awards in the residential flooring category. The winners and honorees will be announced on May 20 at an awards ceremony at the Museum of Modern Art.

Interior Design and ICFF created The NYCxDESIGN Awards to honor the outstanding product exhibited throughout NYCxDESIGN, a citywide celebration of design that takes place each May in New York City. The event brings together all the disciplines of design, commerce, culture, education, and entertainment with a full, varied program, including exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, launches and open studios. 

NYCxDESIGN Awards are open to products from companies exhibiting at affiliated shows including ICFF, WantedDesign, Collective Design, BKLYN Designs, and Sight Unseen Offsite, as well as products shown in NYC-based showrooms, design centers, design districts or temporary installations. Judges for the awards include 30 design luminaries.

Following are the finalists and their rug collections vying for top honors in residential soft surface flooring:

AYKA DESIGN

Designed by Ayka Design's founder K. Michelle Evans, Belem from the Circle of Life collection is woven of 100 percent silk in a Tibetan Knot is shown in detail here, and as a full rug above. Ayka Design is exhibiting at ICFF, booth #2363.

KASTHALL

Field by Kasthall features a ribbed boucle design offered in narrow and wide stripes utilizing a loop technique to emulate the effect of wooden floor planks (read full story)Kasthall has a New York showroom at 200 Lexington Ave.

NANIMARQUINA

Designed for the rug maker's 30th anniversary, the Hayon x Nani collection is based on original sketches created by the celebrated Spanish designer Jamie Hayon. The carpets have 50,000 knots per square meter and are over-tufted. Nanimarquina's showroom is in the SoHo Design District.

WARP & WEFT

Michael Mandapati, founder of New York based Warp & Weft, makes a minimalist statement with Twilight, a hand-knotted collection featuring 40 blended shades of Himalayan wool in striaed solids and geometric designs. The rug studio participates in ICFF (booth #2027) and also has a showroom at 979 3rd Ave. in Manhattan.
