RUG ART LENDS DOMOTEX AN INNOVATIVE, AMERICAN TWIST

New York-based Rug Art International debuts its cutting-edge, high-end rugs at Domotex this Jan. 16-19.

NEW YORK - Fine rug atelier Rug Art International is exhibiting for the first time at international floor coverings fair, Domotex 2016 this Jan. 16-19. It has been years since Rug Art participated in a trade show event, said co-founder Vidal Sasson, who works alongside his wife, Sigal, the designer behind the contemporary range offered by the studio.

Rug Art International joins a cadre of fresh American rug makers heading to Germany, including first-time exhibitors NuLoom and Rug & Kilim, read full story here.

"I participated in ICFF for nine years and then, in 2009, we opened our showroom in the D&D Building [in New York]," said Sasson, who manages the business side of the rug maker. "With the showroom, we really didn't need to do the shows anymore. If someone wanted to see us, they would just come in."

Now, however, after visiting two Domotex events, Sasson said he is giving it a go with the expectation of growing the company's dealer network. He said that Rug Art's innovative and original designs will help it stand apart from other rug exhibitors. Rug Art will be housed in Hall 17, Stand B33.

Rug Art's hand-knotted Journey design, part of the Premier collection, pairs a fine Himalayan wool cut pile and shimmering Chinese silk.

"We are very different from other Domotex exhibitors, and different from many of the other rug companies there, so I decided to take a chance and do it because I am looking for international dealers to represent my line. Domotex is a totally different show because you get dealers from all over the world."

Rug Art, which unveiled a Chicago showroom in August, will be presenting about 25 rugs at Domotex. The selection includes designs from its new hand-crafted Premier collection, which mixes a range of luxurious fibers for added dimensionality, including Tibetan highland wool, Chinese silk, pashmina, linen and bamboo. Rugs are meticulously crafted in Nepal and India.

The plush silk and cashmere Hello Gorgeous rug, inspired by garden foliage, features a sheared cut pile and is made in Nepal.

The studio is represented by showrooms in Boston, Dania, Fla., Del Mar, Calif, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Seattle. "We are rug designers not dealers, we don't sell to stores, we create one piece at a time," Sasson said. "People are looking for things that are different and we are giving this to them."
At Domotex, Sasson says he believes international interior designers and dealers will respond well to his brand's innovative American touch.

Sigal and Vidal Sasson founded Rug Art, which supports GoodWeave International.
