CAPEL RUGS UNVEILS TWO NEW WILLIAMSBURG COLLECTIONS AT APRIL MARKET

Shalimar Resist, shown in khaki from Capel's Williamsburg licensed collection, will premiere at High Point Market in the program's first hand-loomed Jacquard construction.

TROY, N.C. -- Capel Rugs is expanding its best-selling Williamsburg line of licensed "Trend Meets Tradition" designs at the April 16-20 High Point Market with two new hand-loomed jacquard collections.

The collections, Ashland and Shalimar Resist, feature a blend of viscose, wool and cotton for a rich, textural feel with a touch of sheen. They are the first jacquard constructions Capel has produced for the Williamsburg program.

"The hand-loomed jacquard weave gives Ashland and Shalimar Resist a wonderful variegated texture," said Liza Gusler, licensing manager for the Williamsburg program. "From any direction you look at these two rugs, they're going to reflect the light differently, creating subtle shifts in the colors and patterns."

Shown in aqua, Ashland from the Williamsburg licensed rug program, debuts in High Point in a jacquard blend of viscose, wool and cotton for added dimension.

Available in aqua, natural and greige colorways, Ashland features a paisley pattern with a mango seed motif. The design is inspired by a theme from ancient Persian art that was incorporated into Indian chintz fabrics brought to England, and then to Williamsburg, in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

"This pattern revolutionized the fabric world and has remained popular through more than three centuries," said Gusler. "We're updating this classic design with a lovely, soothing neutral palette that will work well with a wide range of interiors."

Shalimar Resist, the other new rug design set for introduction this market, is inspired by an antique resist-print fabric from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's collection of 70,000 fabrics, furniture, ceramics and metal wares.

"This design draws on Asian and Near Eastern influences and the wonderful tradition of resist prints such as batik, where parts of a fabric are covered during the dyeing process for a distinctive artisanal look," said Gusler.

Like Ashland, Shalimar Resist also features a neutral palette with three colors available: indigo, taupe and khaki.

"Both of these new designs are feminine and flirty with a deep, softly rich pile," said Gusler, adding that for both collections, a 5' x 8' rug may retail for $1,010.

In addition to these two new collections, Capel Rugs also is adding new colors to the Williamsburg line's popular Filigree collection. An elegant transitional/traditional design with an all-over, overscaled damask pattern, Filigree collection is being expanded this market with three new colors: burwell green, grey and indigo. Made in India, this design is hand tufted of 100% wool with a 1/2-inch pile height. A 5' x 8' rug may retail for $897.

"These are the first colors we've added to Filigree since the collection was introduced 10 years ago," said Gusler. "These three new versions are right in tune with today's living trends."

One of three new colorways added to the Williamsburg collection's Filgree design, indigo lends an entirely new look to the popular hand-tufted wool overscaled damask.

Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the Williamsburg licensing program now includes more than 7,000 products from 40 leading producers. Inspired by the extensive design archive of the not-for-profit Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the program's unique "Trend Meets Tradition" approach fuses the best of American craftsmanship with international influences, reimagining classic 18th-century elements for today's lifestyles.
