RUGNEWS.COM EXCLUSIVE:
RUG VENDORS BREAKING NEWS
AT ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST SHOW
(PART 2)

Woven Concepts will exhibit rugs from its Rumi Silk collection at this week's Architectural Digest show.

NEW YORK - The Architectural Digest Home Design Show, running March 19 to 22 at New York City Piers 92 and 94, kicks off the spring season of rug shows, including next week's New York Home Fashions Market, The Rug Show in L.A. (March 29 to 31) and the upcoming High Point Market.

Consumers, designers and even rug vendors attending the show will get a sneak peek at what's in store via capsule previews at the AD event.

Following is Part 2 of an exclusive RugNews.com preview of rug designs, trends and news that will emerge at the 2015 AD show.

The New England Collection - New Recycled Hooks

New Navaho inspired Four Corners collection style 1006B

The New England Collection, known for its hooked, gross-point needlework and rag rugs, adds fresh designs to three established popular collections at the AD Home Show, just one month prior to its High Point Market presentation at the Suites at Market Square (space G-1033). The company's Navaho-style Four Corners collection ($48/square foot) gets 14 new patterns in updated colors of grey, black, white and red.

"Even though the attendees this week might not be a direct sales target, we want to show off Four Corners at the AD event because we have had excellent results out west and down south," said Renata Stredl-Fishman, sales and marketing director of the New York firm.

TNEC has expanded its natural fiber Braided range with the addition of nine new styles. The company, which manufactures its rugs in India, adds a lively lineup to its American Hook series, with the newest styles (about 12) made from recycled fabrics. The hooked rugs generally retail for $75-$80 per square foot, however the recycled collection brings the price down to $35, she said.

"This is the fifth year we have participated, and we do like the show because we are able to showcase our newest pieces to designers," said Stredl-Fishman. "While we do reach out to our clients via mailings and electronic updates, seeing the samples helps our local clients a lot in terms of color, texture, and styles. Our new hooked rugs take us back to the roots of hooked rugs, but with recycled fabrics. These new designs from shredded recycled fabrics give us an extra edge as far as pricing, and we do have a growing clientele looking for more affordable rugs. We have had great response from our designers."  TNEC, 36 East 31st St., 9th Floor, New York, NY, 212.683.0167, www.necrugs.com

French Accents Rugs - Premieres Nepalese Bespoke

Another High Point exhibitor and longtime AD show participant, French Accents debuts a luxury collection of transitional rugs called Nepalese Bespoke, which includes approximately 30 designs. Crafted from wool, silk and natural fibers, Nepalese Bespoke is knotted and looped, with varying pile heights for added dimensionality. French Accents will offer a glimpse of the new collection at the AD Home Show, via two very impressionistic painterly designs, a geometric with broad stripes and circles, and a trellis-like option, both in shades of taupes, creams, greys, and black.

Last fall, the company introduced two other custom lines: the Art Deco inspired Asian Reserves and a transitional, more contemporary, Highland Rugs pattern. "This show is for showing new product and exposing our brand to the many design patrons who attend," said a sales representative says who preferred to be unnamed. The company, founded in 1994, carries a large collection of decorative hand-knotted and custom rugs and a wide array of modern flatweaves.

Woven Concepts - New low-contrast Rumi Silk

Fontaine in Primrose from the Rumi Silk collection by Woven Concepts

For its first foray into the AD Home Show, Woven Concepts is tailoring its presentation to the tastes of dealers, boutique home furnishings stores, designers and consumers expected to attend.

"We will be showcasing our Rumi Silk collection, and highlighting some of our new, more low-contrast designs at the AD Home show in addition to the bold colors we've done in the past," said Helleh Hakimian of Woven Concepts.

One example of the low contrast look is the Fontaine pattern, which the boutique firm characterizes as a rustic design. It is shown in primrose a blend of pinks and purples, and also available in a combination of greys and blacks.  Woven Concepts hand knots these rugs in India, using remnants of sustainable sari-silk on a cotton foundation to create designs and fresh colors in keeping with a new modern aesthetic.  The Fontaine rug retails from $2,760 to $16,100. Rugs in the Rumi Silk collection range from $115 to $140 per square foot. Woven Concepts, Great Neck, NY, 201.617.7600,

An online-only retailer, the Citizenry will be on display at the show's SHOPS section. "We launched August 2014, so not only is this our first time at the show, it is our first time debuting a pop-up shopping experience in NYC," says cofounder Carly Nance. The Citizenry offers a curated selection of global, artisan crafted home furnishings, including a selection of hand-dyed and hand-woven rugs.

"Each season, we partner with master artisans to create a new collection inspired by and ethically sourced from another destination," said Nance, adding that for the show, the company is showcasing designs called Estrellas and Cielo Azul, available in indigo or sky blue. "We went to Peru to create our series of naturally-dyed, hand-loomed rugs. Each one takes six weeks to complete, and all are made start to finish in a fair trade environment."

The hand-loomed, flatweave rugs are made of wool and available in 5x8 ($875) and 6x9 ($1,275) including free shipping. "We chose to showcase these designs because they are brilliant displays of rare, 'old world' artisanal techniques. We partnered with a group of 10 artisans to design and develop these works of art," she said. The Citizenry, www.thecitizenry.com
