RUGNEWS.COM EXCLUSIVE:
SACHA WALCKHOFF OF CHRISTIAN LACROIX TALKS RUG DESIGN

The Christian Lacroix Jewels Garden rug makes its US debut at the new Moooi showroom opening in Manhattan today.

PARIS - The grey area between art and design is obliterated in the new rug collection by Moooi, and nowhere is that more evident than in the signature rug designed for the envelope-pushing Dutch brand than the Jewels Garden rug by Sacha Walckhoff,  designer and creative director of trend setting fashion lifestyle house Christian Lacroix.

"Imagining rugs is really magic: It is like designing on a huge sheet of paper," says Walckhoff, who initiated a continuing Christian Lacroix licensed rug and home textile collection for Designer's Guild in England and a porcelain program with Vista Alegre.

"I met the great designer Marcel Wanders [Moooi Co-Founder and Art Director] a few years ago, after he saw photos of my Paris place in a magazine. A few of his creations are in my apartment, and he sent me a nice note about it. I invited him to a Lacroix runaway show in Paris and we became good friends," Walckhoff explained.

"Last Christmas, Marcel called and asked me to design a Lacroix rug for the new collection MOOOI launched this April in Milan. It is a fab collection of rugs digitally printed with an amazing new technique so I sent him this crazy design "Jewels Garden" that we imagined at the studio mixing vintage Haute Couture Lacroix Jewels with flowers, madras textiles that we found at the Paris flea market and graphical shapes related to the Cosmos.

"I wanted to express how we work at Lacroix, mixing our brand patrimony symbols with new and fresh shapes inspired by today's moods and spirit. It was like imagining a fairy tale rug for a modern Sherazade!"

In 2010, I was appointed Creative Director of  the Lacroix  house and, with Nicolas Topiol, CEO of the brand , we decided to create a lifestyle department  with partners such as Designers Guild  (home decor) and Vista Alegre ( Porcelain collection ). It allowed us to build a new way to express Lacroix.

This edition with MOOOI is a new step for this department as are the accessories we are imagining every season for our home decor collection produced by Designers Guild. "This season, I designed a rug collection inspired by the Amazonian jungle. One rug is mixing tiger's stripes with pantera's fur so I named it "Pantigre." One is representing the amazing vegetation at the top of the trees "Canopy” and the third one is made out of huge multi-colored fruits like the ones you may find on the market in Manaos,"  Walckhoff explained.

The Canopy rug by Christian Lacroix for Designers Guild is digitally printed on wool ($1,900 in 67"x91").
