DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH IN RUGS AT NEBRASKA FURNITURE MART

David Snedeker

Omaha, NE - It has been a big year for Nebraska Furniture Mart, which on May 7 officially opened a massive Texas-sized home furnishings store in The Colony that stretches across 100 acres and features a 560,000 square foot retail showroom, including 40,000 feet of floor coverings.

David Snedeker, division merchandise manager-flooring for Nebraska Furniture Mart, said the area rug business has had a tremendous year with double-digit growth, "and that does not seem to be slowing down." Snedeker said area rugs continue to have a stellar year at all locations.

"We have definitely seen our business grow in the machine-made category, primarily in the 5x8 and 8x11 sizes," he said. "Transitional patterns continue to be hot, with blue and gray color palettes seeming to be working very well. Simple patterns and geometrics, and the old reliable shags, seem to still be dominating sales."

Last spring, RugNews.com reported that the new Dallas store's 9,500-square foot rug department features 540 rugs on hanging racks merchandised by color, and "3,000 rugs are on display, either in the department or under furniture settings throughout the store," Snedeker said. While merchandised by color in the hanging section, rugs shown on more than 45 platforms are primarily displayed by theme (flat-weaves, geometrics, traditional, etc.). Platforms include sizes up to 10x14, runners and rounds.  Click here for story and in-store photos.
