PATTERN PLAY AT ART BASEL MIAMI: ARTIST CHRISTIE VAN DER HAAK'S 'MORE IS MORE' AT THE WOLFSONIAN

Using digital patterns influenced by tapestries and Javanese batiks, artist Christie van der Haak transforms the lobby of The Wolfsonian - FIU museum in Miami in conjunction with its Modern Dutch Design exhibition.

MIAMI -- Contemporary artist Christie van der Haak has created the largest public artwork on view during Art Basel Miami Beach 2016 using tapestry- and batik-inspired patterns to transform The Wolfsonian - FIU museum's facade and lobby.

Based in The Hague and winner of the prestigious Ouborg Prize, Christie van der Haak (b. 1950) began her career as a painter and established her name as a designer of intricate, heavily structured immersive environments. Her installation at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag inspired The Wolf to invite her to create the monumental art project on Miami Beach.

The facade of the Wolfsonian - FIU museum in Miami is wrapped in patterns created by Netherlands-based artist Christie van der Haak, a licensing partner of designer fabric company S. Harris in the U.S.

When placed in dialogue with the historic Dutch works on view in the museum's exhibition entitled Modern Dutch Design, Christie's patterns, influenced by tapestries and the Javanese batik technique, become a testament to the rich legacy of Dutch design ingenuity, a symbol of where the Netherlands has come from and where it's going. Her installation at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag inspired The Wolf to invite her to create a monumental art project on Miami Beach.

In a licensing partnership with U.S. designer fabric source S. Harris, Christie van der Haak's colorful paintings are translated into a contemporary drapery and upholstery collection.  Each pattern tells its own story dating back to the old traditions of European history, but with a fresh modern aesthetic.
