KALATY RUGS HIT TOP STYLE NOTES AT SUMMER MARKETS

Kalaty's Artful Modern Living trend includes summer market introductions and best sellers such as the abstract modern deigns of the Juno collection.

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. --  Kalaty's latest introductions and best-sellers hit all the top style trends on the shopping lists of interior designers and fine retailers heading to the upcoming summer markets in Atlanta and Las Vegas.

Once primarily a source of hand-knotted traditional Oriental-styles, the New York family run business has grown its line exponentially over the past few years with cutting-edge contemporary looks. Indeed, while many traditional area rug ateliers have moved away from hand-knotted designs, Kalaty continues to re-invent the category by reworking the genre with fresh, contemporary styling.

The Oberoi collection by Kalaty, with its traditional motifs reworked for modern tastes, is a popular choice for designers looking to incorporate the Classic Beauty trend into traditional interiors updated for contemporary tastes.

"We love incorporating Kalaty designs into our projects because their colors and materials are so on-point for our clients," said Michelle Mancuso, Samantha Drew Interiors in Port Jefferson, New York. "We are finding that our clients are interested in high performance materials with a luxury aesthetic. The rugs we choose are a cross between modern abstracts and couture luxury."

Today Kalaty's repertoire of hand-crafted designs includes an assortment of fresh looks in constructions, textures and patterns ranging from modern takes on traditional motifs to borderless transitional styles to energetic modern abstract designs featuring hand-carving and unique textural effects -- styles consistently sought out by the rug maker's interior design clients.

ARTFUL MODERN LIVING

Kalaty's Equinox collection (EQ-574 pictured) remains a popular choice for designers seeking luxe abstract designs for the floor.

One of the most important style categories for Kalaty can be summed up in the phrase Artful Modern Living, a direction that focuses on abstract looks for the floor. A pioneer in this trend, Kalaty offers a range of patterns from boldly colored to subtle neutrals, all unified by their abstract art motifs and lavish textures.

"Abstract designs have become big business for Kalaty, and some of our bestselling rugs fall into this important category," Ariel Kalaty told RugNews.com. Two of the company's most popular collections based on the abstract art look are Equinox and Juno.

Equinox features modern color palettes paired with random transitional "broken" motifs and abstract painterly looks. The range is hand knotted in a Tibetan knot weave using a combination of wool and Silkette, with select designs finished with hand carving. Likewise, the company's popular Juno range, hand knotted in a Tibetan knot weave using pure Silkette, explores the abstract genre with energetic strokes of fashion colors, including blues, black, gray and vivid red.

Anna Augusto of Augusto Fine Rugs in Boise, Idaho, pointed out that abstrac art rugs continue to grow in popularity in her market and she said Kalaty is a must-see source for the newest colors and designs in the category. "Kalaty is the only hand-knotted source we can still find at Las Vegas Market, and since I shop this show regularly, they are always on my must-see list."

COUTURE LUXURY

Kalaty's sumptuous Elara collection (pictured ER-365) features a hand-knotted Tibetan weave and intricate high-low carving for an erased effect.

Influenced by glamorous couture silks and embellished fabrics, the Couture Luxury trend plays up luxurious touches and elegant finishes. Collections falling into this design direction are high end, meticulously crafted and offer a special sophisticated appeal.

For example, the company's Elara series features modern and borderless designs with erased effects and intricate high-low hand carving. It is hand knotted in a Tibetan weave using premium wool and Silkette with a loop-and-pile texture. Similarly, Torano, a line which is also hand knotted in a Tibetan weave with high-low pile, uses instead a combination of premium hand-spun wool and natural silk. These subtly erased patterns feature a palette of soft colors for an understated couture look and feel.

The America's Magnificent Carpets Award winner Reverie RR-011 features one of the company's finest hand-knotted weaves in an erased look.

And finally, one of Kalaty's most luxurious collections, Reverie is made with one of the company's finest hand-knotted weaves using a combination of premium wool and Silkette. These elegant rugs feature fashionable colorations and today's modern "erased" look. Earlier this year, one rug from this collection, RR-011, won the rug industry's most prestigious award, the America's Magnificent Carpets Award.

CLASSIC BEAUTY

Kalaty's updated rendition of the traditional Oushak (pictured OU-466) remains a designer favorite.

For the Classic Beauty trend, a revivalist trend that revisits traditional designs, Kalaty offers a growing portfolio of choices, including best-selling designer favorites from its Oushak, Oberoi and Magnolia collections.

A go-to source for top quality Oushaks, Kalaty uses premium hand-spun wool for each design, many of them emulating the patterns and characteristics in authentic antique Oushaks. That includes hand knotting in a Turkish-style weave to create a velvety hand, though less formal texture than that of Persian designs.

Also a top style among designers seeking more classic styling is Kalaty's heirloom-quality Oberoi collection, where modern meets traditional with fashion-forward borderless designs. Hand knotted using 100 percent premium hand-spun wool, the collection features classic inspirations, motifs and patterns that are further enhanced by artisanal erased effects.

Taking Oushak designs to the next level, the Magnolia collection is both modern and vintage at the same time. Kalaty hand knots these rugs using 100 percent premium hand-spun wool which is sheared to a low pile.

WORLDLY ECLECTICISM

Reworking iconic global looks Kalaty's growing Soumak collection designs (shown SU-487) are reversible.

Kalaty has plenty to offer interior designers looking for area rugs that fit into what can be called the Worldly Eclecticism category encompassing tribal looks and global motifs, such its newest Soumak and Southwestern designs. The rug maker is known for its ever-growing and evolving Soumak collection featuring reversible double-sided designs. Handcrafted in a flat soumak weave with the finest quality imported wool, the line's patterns and motifs display a mélange of classic Sultan Abad, Mahal and nomadic inspirations.

"Rustic contemporary is a design direction here in Arizona that allows the Southwest to transition from the southwest of the '90s to a modern interpretation," noted interior designer Sandy Beach-Kester, owner of Wickenberg, Arizona's Twisted Dogwood furniture and interior design gallery. "The Soumak collection from Kalaty does this easily with its asymmetrical tribal patterns and colors that reflect the rich earth tones of Sedona with the wonderful tans and blacks of today."
