MOHAWK GROUP WINS BEST OF NEOCON INNOVATION AWARD FOR CONTRACT
CARPET AREA RUGS

Connecting Neurons Definity from the Mohawk Group Expanding Influence collection received the Innovation award at NeoCon in the contract area rugs category.

CHICAGO -- Commercial flooring company Mohawk Group received the Best of NeoCon Innovation Award for Carpet: contract area rugs at the fair's 2019 edition held here this week at the Merchandise Mart.

The award earmarks the Connecting Neurons design in the Definity line's six precision-sculpted carpet designs for commercial interiors. Connecting Neutrons Definity is part of Mohawk Group's Expanding Influence collection, which merges the design of broadloom with the scale and versatility of area rugs in a seamless ordering process.

The winning pattern was designed by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research and Mohawk Group and is based on fractal patterns which scientific research shows have stress-reductive qualities. Connecting Neurons Definity builds on the University of Oregon's studies of fractal-based electronics that have the capability of connecting to the eye's neurons.

Mohawk Group also won the Best of NeoCon Silver award for broadloom for its Textural Effects collection.  The annual awards are co-sponsored by NeoCon and Contract Magazine.

"At Mohawk Group, better design, sustainability and innovation is second nature to our culture, product design and manufacturing processes," said Jackie Dettmar, vice president of design and product development. "This year at NeoCon, we are excited to share flooring solutions and programs that continue to place our customers at the center - from hard surfaces with woven textures and the next generation of innovative carpet fiber, to science-based product collaborations that have groundbreaking implications for the built environment. We are also showcasing how our commitment to sustainability has taken yet another giant leap with the expansion of our Living Product platform."

One of this year's highlighted award-winning collections is Relaxing Floors, a modular carpet system designed by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research using fractal design as the basis of its patterning. Fractals are the building block of many of nature's patterns and have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and so provide benefits to physical health.

The injection of texture and warmth into commercial spaces is especially prevalent in this year's showcase with the addition of Textural Effects, an award-winning broadloom and carpet plank collection that employs bulky, woolen nylon yarns to create a sensory aesthetic that reconnects end users with nature.

This year at NeoCon, Mohawk Group officially announced that its portfolio of Living Products has grown from six to more than 300 products. All of these carpet tile products, which are manufactured at Mohawk's Glasgow, Virginia plant, are comprised of Duracolor or ColorStrand solution-dyed nylon fibers on EcoFlex NXT, EcoFlex NXT AIR or EcoFlex Matrix backings and have been certified by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) as having achieved the stringent requirements for Living Product Challenge Petal Certification. This year's Living Product introductions at NeoCon include Relaxing Floors and Textural Effects carpet plank styles.

The Living Product Challenge is an ILFI program that provides a framework for manufacturers to reimagine the design and construction of products to function as elegantly and efficiently as anything found in the natural world. All Living Products are created to be net positive and benefit people and the environment through specific innovations in materials, manufacturing and community involvement. Additionally, Petal Certification dictates that products be free of toxins, informed by biomimicry and biophilia, socially responsible and made in an environment that is respectful of the rights of workers.
