09142018 Best of The Rug Show NY: New Twists on Traditional, Part 2

 

The industry's Renaissance Man of design, Jurgen Dahlmanns of Rug Star, curated a selection ranging from classic to ultra-contemporary for his Rug Show fans to ogle. But in Dahlmann's hands, even the classics are trend-setting -- with daring colors and extrapolations of pattern, as evidenced in his New Causcasian designs, shown for the first time to U.S. shoppers.

First-time exhibitor Rica Basagoiti of Spain piqued curiosity with its Alcaraz collection, which recreates the Spanish knot of carpets handwoven in 16th and 17th century Spain at Alcaraz in Murcia. "It's something like a flaweave with a pile," explained Begona De La Rica, a company principal. "No one makes these nowadays. It's important for us."
 

Paul McSweeney of The Persian Carpet was also pleased with sales." It's been a good show -- good buyers and a steady flow. We added new clients and we beat last year," he said, noting that the company's traditional carpets are a big draw for Rug Show classicists. "We tell them we still love traditional and we are the last ones with color." That said, McSweeney reported a surprise best-seller at the show: a traditional design from the company's first line woven in India.
 

Flatweave aficionados flocked to Nasiri's stand to snag the company's Mazandaran, Pelas and Damavand designs, which are woven in Iran and considered to be on par with the great Persian collectibles. Nader Nasiri told RugNews.com that he will start producing his rugs in Turkey because of the recent embargo on Iranian carpets.
 

Rug & Kilim's Josh Nazmiyal, who is credited with initiating the trend to soft modern interpretations of Scandinavian flatweaves, said Mid-Century looks sold out at the show. "Our new pile Scandinavian collection was also popular - it's all about texture, texture, texture," he said.

Nasiri, a go-to source for Mazandaran, Pelas and Damavand flatweaves authentically woven in Iran, got lots of attention for this new Mid-Century design in wool at the Rug Show NY.

Said Newman and Dan Neman of Neman International showcased traditional Persian designs, antique-inspired reproductions, its Peshawar collection and Indian programmed lines at its colorful Rug Show NY stand.

Busy with customers throughout the show, Pacific Collection displayed a varied range of its impeccable reproductions of traditional classics.
 

 

 

A must-see for its Spanish knot Alcaraz carpets woven as they were in 16th and 17th century Spain, Rica Basagoiti's revivals utilize the extinct knot and vivid colors of the antiques ( blue wheel design above; detail below).

Winner of multiple Domotex awards for its Mid-Century flatweaves, Rug and Kilim feeds demand for the collection's soft colors, and wins over buyers with its new pile rugs in Scandinavian designs for a coordinated look in varying textures.


RUG STAR BY JURGEN DAHLMANNS

 
Jurgen Dahlmanns introduces New York shoppers to his chic new take on tribal rugs with his New Caucasian design 6515 from the New Classics series. The dazzling design begins with a base of classic Kazak colors then spotlights certain motifs with unexpected sparks of teal, hot pink, beige and yellow.

A go-to source for classic Persian designs woven and finished in Afghanistan, The Persian Carpet remains true to its passion for traditional. But a surprise hit at the show was the company's new transitional rugs from India, especially this artfully textured design.
