HIGH POINT, N.C. -- At its 10th anniversary celebration during High Point Market, the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) announced the winners of its "Get Your Green On" design competition, with Virginia-based Paola McDonald of Olamar Interiors taking the top honor.

The competition was created to honor interior designers who specify sustainable and healthful home furnishings for their clients' residences. The award-winning interior showcases rugs by Surya, a supporter of sustainable design and a longtime member of SFC.  "At Surya, we are committed to environmental stewardship, and employ sustainable practices and materials wherever possible to minimize the impact on the environment," expalined Satya Tiwari, president, Surya.

"A number of our rugs are crafted using natural fibers such as jute and sisal, undyed wool and, more recently, fibers such as Tencel, which is derived from wood pulp from sustainable tree farms. We also repurpose materials, for example, discarded sari silk and leather, to create rug designs that are both stylish and eco-friendly," Tiwari said.

Paola McDonald, winner of SFC's top award in the first Design Excellence Award competition, specified a Surya rug of recycled cotton in the home's dining room.

McDonald won the Design Excellence Award for creating settings that in addition to incorporating sustainable products from SFC members, also focused on energy conservation and related sustainable practices. The living room and dining room both feature Surya rugs.

Colorful and eco-friendly, the Bazaar rug by Surya is crafted of recycled cotton and was selected by Paola McDonald of Olamar Interiors' for her SFC award winning interior.

In the dining room, a brightly-colored Bazaar rug (BZR-8006) constructed of recycled cotton was specified. The living room rug is a wool flatweave with overscaled motif in wool. Described as a Bohemian Modern eco-friendly Washington, D.C., row house, the colorful, award-winning interior was designed to match the client's fun personality, and to meet her request to make it as 'green' and chemical free as possible.

The Paddington wool flatweave rug by Surya was used in the living room of Paola McDonald of Olamar Interiors' winning SFC Design Excellence Award interior.

Other award winners were Robin Wilson of Robin Wilson Home in New York, who won the award for the best Shared Spaces project with a budget of more than $30,000; and Sheree Vincent of Fusion Designed in Wyoming, Minnesota, who won the Shared Spaces award for projects under $30,000.

SFC also announced that Dann Foley of Dann Inc. in Palm Springs, California, won the award for best outdoor space design (read full story).
