WORLD CARPET AND RUG SHIPMENTS
TO U.S. GROWS 6.3%  IN 2013 OVER 2012

WASHINGTON, DC -- Imports of carpets and rugs to the U.S. were up 6.3% in 2013, compared to 2012, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Textile & Apparel.

Total rug and carpet shipments amounted to $1.81 billion in 2013, compared to $1.70 billion in 2012.

Carpets and rug shipments using man-made fiber amounted to $1.12 billion in 2013, compared to $1.03 billion in 2012, an increase of 8%.

Shipments of wool products amounted to $685.5 million in 2013 compared to $661.9 million in 2012, an increase of 3.5%

The Department of Commerce does not break down figures of cotton carpet and rug imports to the U.S.

Wool Carpet and Rug Shipments to U.S.

The top three shippers to the U.S. -- India, China and Pakistan -- accounted for nearly 75% of all wool rugs and carpets brought into the U.S. in 2013. In 2012, these three countries also accounted for nearly 75% of the total.

India, with $337.655 million in wool shipments,  accounted for  49.2% of all wool rugs and carpets shipped to the U.S. in 2013.In 2012, the figure was slightly over 46%

Wool carpet and rug shipments from China declined 3.81% to $96.286 million, compared to the $100.1 million shipped in 2012,  accounting for 14% of the total.

Pakistan's  2013 shipments of $68.545                                million in wool carpet and rugs increased 3.7% and accounted for slightly less than 10% of the total in 2012.

Man-Made Fiber Carpet and Rug Shipments to U.S.

China, with $373.374 million in shipments remained the largest exporter of man-made carpets and rugs into the U.S. in 2013. China 's 2012 shipments were $366.62 million, a gain of 1.94%. It accounted for nearly a third of all shipments of man-made fiber carpets and rugs..

In second place,  2013 shipments from Turkey grew over 20% compared to 2012. Turkey accounted for $180.87  million in shipments of man-made carpets and rugs to the U.S., or  16.1% of the total. In 2012, Turkey's shipments of man made fiber rugs and carpet were $150.552 million.

Egypt was in third place, with  $135.272 million in man-made fiber shipments in 2013, or 12% of the total. In 2012, Egypt exported $113.661 in man-made fiber carpets and rugs, an increase of 19%.

Together, the top three shipping countries shipped $689.516 in man-made fiber carpets and rugs in 2013,  accounting  for 61% of the total shipments.

India, now in fifth position with $74.692 million in man-made carpet and rug shipments in 2013, showed a gain of 41%, the largest increase in market share.

In 2012, India was in sixth position with $52.953 million in man-made carpet and rug exports to the  U.S.

As India continues to make improvements in its infrastructure and the development of a reliable electrical grid, the Indian carpet making industry is adding power looms as well as adding man-made carpet and rug fiber extrusion.
