THE 22+ HOTTEST AREA RUGS AT LAS VEGAS MARKET, PART 1

LAS VEGAS -- Despite sweltering temperatures hitting at the height of the dog days of summer, Las Vegas Market pulled in some top names in the retail and interior design business who were hoping to pick up the latest fashion looks in area rugs.

Among the big spenders at the show were VIPs from Nebraska Furniture Mart, HOM Furniture, the Macys-Mink crew, Overstock, Grandin Road/Frontgate and many more. Also walking the corridors were boutique and specialty rug retailers from coast to coast: From John Murse of Rugs as Art in Sarasota, Florida, to Steve Blumkin of Outrageous Rugs in San Diego, California. Then there were the hundreds of designers browsing the latest collections for cutting-edge weave and yarn innovations.

"Buyers at summer Las Vegas Market were here to buy and exhibitors reported steady order writing," explained Bob Maricich, CEO of International Market Centers. Maricich's assessment bears out for many of the area rug executives surveyed -- many reported a slow Sunday start to the show, but busy schedules on Monday and Tuesday of market.

And the trends buyers were shopping would surprise no one in the industry. However, rug vendors continued to raise the bar with ever more impressive technical acumen.

Colorations persisted in the shift toward warmer designs with a palette of cream colors and browns plus earthy rusts and reds trending on one side of the spectrum. On the other side, cooler mint greens and ice blues, sometimes paired with blush, were apparent. Blue was naturally omnipresent, as was the ubiquitous gray -- both continuing to be among the top-selling colorways during summer market.

In term of style, abstracts remain favorites but updated traditional designs continue their upward trajectory. This time around those types of classic motifs where often cast in a tonal palette, sometimes from a single color with carved design effect, other times they feature completely fresh color combinations, where neutrals are injected with a pop of color lending the potentially staid a contemporary energy. And if those Persian looks happen to go with the more traditional colorations of reds or rusts paired with blues, blacks or browns, they'll be machine-made so they don't break the bank.

In this exhaustive, two-part series, RugNews.com tours the top area rug showrooms to bring you the 20 hottest area rugs on view at summer market. Don't miss Part 2, where the review continues from companies from L to U.
